VOLUNTEERS
I am currently carrying out research at Bangor University, I am in need of participants
and I was wondering if your club could help. The research being carried out is to look at the cardiac
adaptations of fell runners using ultrasound. The procedure is completely harmless and only
requires the participant to lie down whilst a probe is placed on the chest to gain an ultrasonic
image of the heart. The study will take no longer than 1 hour, but would require participants
Coming to the Bangor University Sports Health and Exercise Science department. Details of
the heart dimensions such as wall thicknesses and chamber dimensions will be recorded. I am
looking for male participants between the ages of 18&50 who are regularly active in the sport
of fell running, who preferably have been training for over 2 years, and who or have competed
at a national or international level. If anyone shows interest in being a participant could you
please give them my contact details so I can find more information about their involvement
and hopefully arrange a time slot for the study. Not only will the participants be able to gain a
detailed analysis of the size of the heart as a direct result of their sport, they will also be
involved in research surrounding fell running, which I’m sure you are aware of is currently
Lacking. A couple of National level runners at the university have already been selected for this
study and I hope you will be able to help in finding more participants.Thank you for your time, Kind regards, Jack Sharkey. (Mob; 07858828156, Email peu66a@bangor.ac.uk)

Tuesday Night Hill Reps
We're getting a good turn out now.
Must have been pushing 15-20, with roughly equal numbers of blokes and women, this week; which formed a few different paced groups so there's always people to keep with.
Meet Tuesday 6pm at the Vic Llanberis. They carry on until the light comes back or Mike's Tuesday Evenings Race Series starts.
Basic format is warm up for a mile, then 10 or so efforts up and down the roads around Llanberis, from 20 second sprints, to 6 minute killers. Session normally lasts 1-1.5 hrs.
Great session.

HENRY COMES OF AGE
16 year old Eryri Harrier Henry Williams left everyone else trailing as he won his first major senior event,The Menai Mini Marathon 10km on Sunday 24th January as the new undulating course which took the runners through Llanfair P.G. (Not enough room for its full title!) en-route back to Menai Bridge proved no problem for Henry as he overhauled early pace setter Angus Mackay (Bangor University) to win in 36:07. Full results are not yet in but there was a good contingent of Eryri Harriers taking part with Iwan Morton among the pace setters and Jim Kelly not far behind. The ladies race was won by Bangor University's Jenny Brierly which made it a double success for the weekend following her Twin Pier 10k win the previous day.

ROB'S MUDDY GOOD SHOW
Eryri's Rob Samuel again did the club proud following on from his 9th place finish in the McCain UK Cross Challenge International at Cardiff last week where he was also the 1st of the Welsh team to finish, Rob impressed again while representing Wales in the Belfast Antrim IAAF and Celtic Cross Country International. Despite the overcast conditions the rain stayed away, the soft muddy ground conditions did not deter Rob as again he was the clear 1st Welsh team finisher in 12th place overall in a top quality international class field with a time of 30:03. The race was won by Kenyan Mike Kiegen in 27:49 with last weeks Cardiff race winner Andy Vernon 2nd in 28:40.
There were 57 finishers.
WELL DONE ROB.
MATTHEW'S SUPIER TO PIER WIN

Other notable Eryri performances came from: 21st (1st MV/50) Arwel Lewis 37:45. 22nd James McQueen 38:05. 2nd Female (1st FV/35) Andrea Roberts 39:28 and new Eryri recruit Louise Emery 3rd Female 42:39.

Borders League @ Tattenhall?
The cancellation of the Borders League event at Tatenhall, left a few of the club's runners looking for alternative entertainment with which to fill their Sunday morning. Not content with just another foray into the wilderness and in the spirit of inter club relations...Arwel and Rory were coerced into joining North Wales Road Runner Tammy Lewis-Jones and Menai's Andy Walling and Gary Williams on a jaunt across the Carneddau. What followed was a gruelling run lasting over two and a half hours, with slips and slides over the snow and ice and a punishing hack. So who says, that the spirit of running and getting out with members of other north Wales clubs has gone......Long live the Sunday run, Long Live Tea and Toast afterwards at Andy's!

Harriers in succesful raiding of Yorkshire Giant's Nest
The ever present Eryri travelling clan were on the road once again this New Year's.
Auld Lang Syne Fell race 31/12/2009 5.5 miles, 800ft
On New Years eve four of Eryri's most reliable travllers took part in the legendary Auld Lang Syne fell race up on Haworth moor near Halifax. Over 500 ran last year so this year for the first time it was pre-entry and there were 380 finishers. As always there was a top quality field with world triathlon champ Ali Brownlee and brother Jonathan as well as legend Ian Holmes, 4 time Snowdon champ Andi Jones all amongst a star studded field.
Out of 380 finishers and in deep, snowy conditions, world tri champ Ali Brownlee won in 39.35. Eryri finishers were:
8th Math Roberts 43.13
25th Iain Ridgway 45.33
67th Sarah Ridgway, 3rd lady, 49.04
190th Dils Rowlands 56.36
Giant's Tooth, 01/01/2010, 3 miles, 500ft
Following a refuel in Haworth on New Year's eve the clan then travelled 5 miles south to Ogden reservoir to take part in the classic Giant's Tooth fell race. Once again conditions were cold, snowy and icy. In a good and varied route and out of 108 finishers Eryri had two victors:
1st overall Math Roberts in 18.17
1st lady overall Sarah Ridgway in 21.03
6th Iain Ridgway in 19.14
57th Dils Rowlands in 24.43
Excellent few days racing again in Yorkshire and definitely recommended!
