Richards North Wales 10k Title
Eryri's Richard Roberts and Andrea Rowland's took time out from mountain running to win the Senior Men/Women's North Wales 10km titles which was incorporated into the Caernarfon 10km road race on Sunday 30th August
Weather conditions were overcast, dry and warm with a slight head wind along the Menai Straits which got stronger after the 2km mark, though nothing to what we have experienced in the past! Richard stayed with 2007 race winner and club mate Gwyn Owen along the Menai Straits until the left turn after the 4km mark when Richard opened up a gap on Gwyn which he maintained and extended to the finish at the Coed Helen Recreational Grounds in a time of 33:29 with Gwyn 2nd in 33:57 while Brendan Rothery had another good run to finish 5th in 34:59.
Andrea Rowland's led from the start to win the women's title in a time of 40:02. Eryri's other North Wales Championship winners were: MV/50 Arwel Lewis 38:22 and MV/65 Emyr Davies 44:12 who added yet another North Wales title to his vast collection! ahead of club mate Don Williams 44:58.
Well done to the 27 Eryri Harriers who were among the 163 finishers in the club organised race and a big thank you to the following race officials/marshals who helped to make the race a success.
Registration/Results: Sharon Owen & Ann Lewis.
Timekeepers: Phil Tan Jones & Eilir Evans.
Number recorders: Ann Lewis & Lorraine.
Lead car/Course layout: Dafydd Ellis (Who originally set up and organised the race in 1986).
Marshals: Alan Lewis. Gwilym Rhys Lewis. Peter Lewis and Dave Pryce.
Drink Station: Chris Evans.
Race Referee: Paul Brooks.
Finally. Thank you to St John Ambulance and Gwynedd County Council for their support.
Plus anyone else that I might have missed out!

Yorkshire Racing Weekender (Math Roberts)
As numerous are the races are in Yorkshire over summer it's possible to race every day of the weekend, sometimes even more than once a day.
Thursday 20th, Dennis Stitt Memorial, Holmfirth, 5 miles, 950ft
A good little 2 lap race which started from Carnforth cricket club (possibly the highest cricket club in England?) near the village of Holmfirth in West Yorks. Holmfirth Harriers were the hosts, approximately 1oo runners and I managed a 1st place by some 30 seconds from Yorkshire vet 50 king Steve Oldfield and local man Tom Brunt in 3rd.
Saturday 22nd, Gargrave show fell race, 3 miles, 950ft. 1400hrs
This was part of the Gargrave agricultural show and was one of the classic BOFRA series of races - superbly short and steep races which take place all over North England throughout the Summer. A brilliantly varied terrain race had 71 runners, with Lee Athersmith of Bingley winning in 23.12 whilst I was 2nd in 23.12
BOFRA race details: http://www.bofra.org.uk/index.php
The same day but starting at 1700hrs and 15 miles to the east - Burnsall feast sports fell race, 1.5 miles, 900ft
This was the classic of the lot. One of the legendary short races of the fell racing calendar which has been raced since the early 1870, an amazing record of 12.48 is jointly held since 1977 and 1983 by Fred Reeves and J.R Wilde which means there's a £1000 prize for anyone breaking the record!! The race is part of Burnsall village sports day so the place was packed with a superb atmosphere. Out of 140 odd finishers Superman Ian Holmes won in 14.26, I finished in 6th in 16.06.
All in all a big recommendations for anyone, on the August bank holiday you could do a show on the Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday...superb!
Also coming home with a 4 pack of Wychwood ales, a drill, a shield and a £40 means a good weekend away!

BEACONS GOLD FOR MARTIN
Mynydd Du's Martin Shaw made good use of his local knowledge to win the Brecon Beacons tough 19m/450ft race on Saturday 22nd August, his win also secured him the Welsh Athletics Mountain Running Championship ahead of Eryri's Richard Roberts, both started the race level on points, Martin won in a time of 2:43:12 with Richard 2nd in 2:53:13, at least Richard's partner Anna Bartlett made sure of Gold by winning the women's category in 3:38:38 and with it the Welsh Athletics MR title, disappointingly only two women completed three of the four races to qualify for the awards, the other being Eryri's Jenny Hemming who gave the Beacons a miss. Eryri's Arwel Lewis finished 6th (1st MV/50) in 3:19:25 to clinch the Welsh MV/50 title, while it was a close run thing for the Welsh MV/60 title with Cardiff's Dic Evans pipping Eryri's Don Williams by three points, Dic was 1st MV/60 on the day in 3:36:28 with Don finishing in a time of 3:44:26. The only other Eryri Harrier to take part was Emyr Davies who despite a knee problem completed the course around the five hour mark.
There were 59 race starters.
Excellent weather for the race and well done to the organiser Tom Gibbs and his crew for such a well organised friendly event.

With current championship leader Tim Davies not expected to compete in the event it looks like a race off and winner takes all between Eryri's Richard Roberts and Mynydd Du's Martin Shaw who are currently level on 40 points each for the Welsh title. Noel Craine leads the MV/40's. Arwel Lewis the MV/50's and Dic Evans the MV/60's 3pts ahead of Don Williams.
With Jackie Lee missing the event it is a three horse race for the title between Eryri's Andrea Rowlands, Jenny Hemming and Shrewsbury's Anna Bartlett. Current positions: Jenny 46pts. Jackie 45. Andrea 42 and Anna 40pts. Eryri's Ali Thomas leads the LV/40's.

Pricey day at Race the Train, Tywyn
Opting for a slight variation in race types and location (good choice considering Elidir was shortened!), five Harriers made the journey down to Tywyn for the annual Race the Train event.
The race is a fast out and back 14 mile event, mainly ran over private fields and some narrow singletrack footpaths undulating on the way back. Evidently over the years the event has built up a massive reputation nationwide with 959 runners completing the main race coming from all over the shop. Also the task of beating the train is no easy one - only 151 out of 959 clocking the 1.47 to beat the train. The huge number of entries corresponded with the astronomical enter on the day cost of £25 but the massive support all along the course made up for this.
The race was won by Sale Harrier and British international Gareth Raven in 1.21.18.
Eryri finishers:
5TH Math Roberts , 1.29.04
34TH James McQueen, 1.36.53
55TH Iwan Edgar, 1.40.20
90TH Christoph Gertler, 1.43.59
774TH Alwyn Williams, 2.31.46

Râs Elidir Fawr
Well another washout but it didnt stop 4 of the records being broken some by nearly 7 minutes! At 10.30 with zero vis and driving rain in Nant I decided to opt 4 the shorter route also bearing in mind that Craig Jones boys in blue would be charging round the mountain with truncheons drawn in the opposite direction on their Snowdonia 7's race, in the event a wise decision as the last runner in took over 71minutes!
Thanks to Maggie, Alwyn and John Carson on the mountain, Daffyd 4 time keeping, Kes's mum on the soup, the Vaynol Arms 4 putting us up and the 42 runners who turned up it all seemed 2 go ok and full results and a few shots of the river xing can b found on the WFRA web site.
Peris Horseshoe, marshalls needed, if u can spare a couple of hours on the day get in touch with Maggie or myself asap please, if u r Eryri and your not running u should b helping,ta,Mike.

Despite the inclement weather, 132 athletes completed the 4m/951ft Ponderosa race on Wednesday 12th August, Liverpool Harriers Adam Peers disappeared into the mist from the start to comfortbly win in a good time despite the rain and mud of 25:02 ahead of club mate Ricky Challinor 25:25. Eryri's Matthew Roberts back from his Azerbaijan sojourn had a good run to finish 4th in 26:33 with Iain Ridgway 8th in 28:00. 12th Tim Higginbottom 28:24. 24th (1st MV50) and feeling the effects of his 48th race so far this year! NEAR MISS FOR CHRIS
Eryri's Chris Near missed out on the Gladstone 9 course record by a mere 9 seconds on Saturday 8th August when he won the 9m/2800ft event in 1:16:45 with club mate Tim Higginbottom (still feeling the effects of his superb Paddy Buckley record run) 2nd in 1:18:31 with Scott Butterworth making it a clean sweep for Eryri in 3rd in a time of 1:21:12 followed by 4th (1st M/V) Arwel lewis 1:21:19. Other notable Eryri results were: 7th (1st S/W) Andrea Rowlands in a new course record time of 1:24:45. 2nd S/W Ruth Metcalfe 1:30:14. 2nd MV/50 Eilir Evans 1:28:55. 1st MV/60 Don Williams 1:33:23. 2nd MV60 Mike Blake 1:41:42. 3rd S/W Pilar Near 1:50:09 and 3rd MV/60 Emyr Davies 1:53:09.
