Solid runs for Eryri runners at the Noonstone

In the first round of the English fell running champs there were two Eryri runners representing the club. The race was a classic sounding route near Todmorden, Rochdale, measuring at 9 miles with 2300ft of climbing taking in some horridly boggy ground as well as the summit of Stodley Pike. Race winner was Tal y Fan 2009 champ Matt Speake of Dark Peak in 1.08.16. First Eryri runner home was Rich Roberts in an excellent 13th place in a time of 1.11.06 with Jackie Lee 4th lady overall in 1.23.49. There were 423 finishers.

Presentation Evening

Thank you to everyone who helped organise our 2009 presentation evening on Friday 20th February, to Y Caban Brynrefail for welcoming us to their fabulous establishment and for the excellent food served, to Alistair Tye and Pete Douglas for the excellent slide show and photographs of the event, our two special guest speakers, Andy and Amanda Heading and to everyone who attended the event. Congratulations to all our award winners.
Rob Samuel travelled all the way from Swansea to attend the awards evening after competing in the Welsh Cross Country Championships earlier on in the afternoon, the effects of his superb run in the Barcelona Half Marathon six days earlier took their toll and a weary Rob had to settle for the Bronze medal just as he did last year following a gutsy run on the undulating Singleton Park course.

Ilkley Moor Fell race

With a 2 hour journey under the belt and the Trafford 10k cancelled due to snow as well as the Wrexham half the next closest option to race for Math Roberts was to travel a further 2 hours over the snowy M62 to Ilkley in Yorkshire.

A heavily snow covered course took place on Ilkley moor, some 5 miles with 1200 feet of winding, narrow criss crossing paths up and across the moor.

Provisional results put Roberts in 4th in 43mins with WFRA head honcho Ross Powell also adding himself to the Welsh finishers list.

Ridgway Roles Back the Years!!

Cross Timbers Trail Run 50 mile, Texas

Reports are provisional at this stage but news has filtered through from the deep south of Texas in the USA that ultra-man Iain Ridgway is back to winning ways. In the 50 mile Cross Timbers trail run in Lake Texsom, Whitesboro, North Teaxs it looks as if Iain has destroyed the field finishing 45 minutes ahead of the 2nd place runner and possibly breaking the course record to finish in 7hours and 49minutes.

Watch this space for more news.

Next up for Iain is the Fort Worth Cowtown Marathon next weekend!!

Results, etc. should be here soon:

Ras Moel y Ci report

With an excellent 99 starters in yesterday's Moel y Ci race, Eryri members turned up in force - with 49 runners on the day.

Rich Roberts romped home to win in a good time of 36.50, just over a minute slower than Lloyd Taggart's record. Eryri new boy Arthur Connell was having a stormer to reach the summit in 2nd but unfortunately due to a slight navigation issue the runners positioned 2nd-8th-ish all went wrong within the last mile which meant Superman vet 50 SPJ finished in a superb 3rd in 42.53. Don Williams cantered home to be 1st vet 60 in 48.35 with Ron Hird 1st vet 70 in 1.09.55. In the ladies Eryri's Jenny Hemming and Becky Law had a close race to finish in 2nd and 3rd, with Annie Williams 1st vet 40 and Maggie Oliver 1st vet 60.

Excellently organised by Jeremy et al once again!

Ras Moelyci results

While deep, fresh snow and bright sunshine make for a fantastic hill run, they cast fear into the heart of the race organizer ! Sure enough, lots of early phone calls to ask if the race is still on – it was. On the way to the venue at 08.30am there was a Police road closure blocking all those coming in from Llanberis; fortunately opened again soon enough. Sun, snow and the reputation of post-race soup and cakes brought 101 runners to the Moelyci Environmental Centre this year. Congratulations to Richard Roberts of Eryri, taking his second win on this course in 36.50, and to Anna Bartlett of Shrewsbury leading the women round in 46.14 at 20th overall. Matthew Fortes (u/a) was 2nd in 42.39 and Steve Jones of Eryri cruised round into 3rd place and 1st MV50 in 42.53. David Carson of Shropshire Shufflers was 1st MV40 and 5th in 43.24, Don Williams of Eryri 1st MV60 at 31st in 48.35, and of the two MV70s Ron Hird was first back in 1.09.45. Annie Williams of Eryri repeated last year’s form at 1st FV40 in 51.44 with Maggie Oliver of Eryri again 1st FV60 in 1.04.57.

The junior race winner was Bronwen Jenkinson of Eryri in 11.53 with Leo Dearden of Achille Ratti first boy at 2nd overall in 12.25.

Many thanks go to the Centre staff, marshals, ‘Team Dolly’ radio network, the registration and finish team and prize donators. Projects at the Moelyci Environmental Centre focus on sustainability, local produce and local crafts. The soup and cakes were from organic local suppliers accompanied by Fair Trade tea and coffee.

The 3rd fixture in the Borders Road Running league took place on Sunday 14th February at Pensarn near Abergele. The weather conditions for the fast/flat there & back 5 mile course were dry, calm and not too cold for the 233 competitors as Ricky Challinor (Deeside) led from the off to complete a hat trick of wins in the league so far in a time of 26:20 with Mr consistent Brendan Rothery 2nd in 26:29, there was a three minute wait for the next Eryri finisher, debutant Thomas DeLuca 35th in 29:30 followed by: 43rd Tony Woodall 29:49. 45th Arwel Lewis 29:52. 68th Jos Jones 31:30. 69th Dylan Owen 31:32. 76th Ashley Wager 31:55. 79th (1st MV/65) Emyr Davies 32:04. 103rd (2nd MV/65) Don Williams 33:30. 106th Ian Rothery 33:35. 131st Mervyn Williams 34:49. 162nd (on his B/L debut) Alun Rowlands 36:25 and 216th Roy Jardine 42:21. Despite finishing 4th team on the day, Eryri's men still find themselves in 6th place overall, 52 points behind Wrexham and safety from relegation!
Our women meanwhile are in with a good chance of promotion after a 2nd placed finish on the day to lie 3rd overall 30 points behind West Cheshire. In the overall individual standings, Brendan Rothery currently leads the senior men's category while Emyr Davies leads the MV/65 category with Don Williams 2nd.

NWXC GOLD FOR ERYRI LADIES

Saturday saw the last fixture in the North Wales Cross Country League at Oswestry and it finished with some success for Eryri. It was fantastic that Richard Roberts got the award for first Senior man, backed up by the evergreen Emyr Davies and Don Williams finishing first and second respectively in the over 65 category. Congratulations also to Ron Hird finishing 3rd over 70 in his first season competing in this category in the league. Unfortunately the men’s teams did not feature in the medal positions; despite doing so well at Colwyn Bay and Bangor (travelling to the more distant fixtures seems to be a problem!). Thanks to Arwel 27th, John Harold 47th, Steve Llan Jones 80th and Eurwyn Edwards 103rd for turning out for the club.
However the women’s team surpassed last years silver medal position by gaining the gold senior ladies team medal (the club last won this in the 1995/6 season!) and the Veteran Ladies bronze team medal. Well deserved individual awards went to Andrea Rowlands (4th senior lady and 3rd over 35), Annie Williams (1st in the over 45 category) and Maggie Oliver (1st over 60). Finishing order at Oswestry was Jenny Heming, Becky Law, Andrea Rowlands, Annie Williams, Allison Donnelly and Maggie Oliver.
Many thanks to all who participated and helped in the league this season.
Meanwhile: Up in scotland Rob Samuel was on his travels again representing Bangor University in the British Universities Cross Country Championships in Stirling where Rob finished 12th overall beating some quality athletes in the process. There were 228. finishers

ERYRI STORM THE ORME

The Eryri Harriers were out in force for the Nick Beer Llandudno 10km road race on Sunday 7th February with 34 club members completing the scenic route around the Great Orme. Despite a valiant attempt to repeat his Twin Piers success of two weeks ago, Eryri's Matthew Roberts had to settle for 2nd place in a time of 33:35 behind Jason Dunkerley (East Cheshire Harriers) 33:21 though Matthew had the consolation of leading the Eryri team of 3rd Brendan Rothery 34:08 and 5th Paul Wathan to success, Paul just piping Iain Ridgway to the finishing line as both were given the same time of 35:40. Other notable Eryri prize winners were: 17th (3rd MV/45)Thomas Deluca 37:37. 20th (3rd MV/40) James McQueen 38:02. 31st (2nd Woman) Sarah Ridgway 38:34. 32nd (2nd MV/50) Arwel Lewis 38:36 & 190th (3rd LV/40) Libby Peter 47:51.
The weather conditions were dry with a slight head wind along the promenade for the 540 race finishers.

CROSS COUNTRY GOLD FOR ERYRI'S WOMEN

At the final Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League race at Oswestry, Eryri's Women showed the men up by at least turning out and supporting the club and in the process winning the title for the first time since the mid nineties while our veteran women also won bronze. Despite an appeal to members to support the club at the event only eight men turned out, Mike Blake was there after competing in the Titterstone Clee race in the morning as always ready to support the club but due to a call of nature, he missed the start! Richard Roberts somewhat saved the men's blushes by not only winning the race but also the overall North Wales Cross Country League title following in the footsteps of some other illustrious Eryri athletes who have also won the title: Colin Donnelly, Emlyn Roberts, Colin Jones and Alun Vaughan among them.
Full report to come from Maggie.

Garstang 10k

Sarah ridgway ran her fastest 10k for nearly 2 years this weekend, winning the Garstang 10k in 38:14, 28th overall, her second fastest 10k to date. I (Iain) finished 9th in 35:37. Conditions were pretty good for running, very cold and crisp, and thankfully no snow on the roads. Nice rural route, the race is gently undulating with a few short sharp climbs and narrow bends on quiet country roads. There were 321 runners.
