Eryri's Rob Samuel was to the fore again, leading from start to finish to comfortably win the senior men's race in the Welsh Inter-Regional Cross-Country Championships at Builth Wells on Sunday 13th December completing the 10.2km course in 32:34 as he led the North Wales team to Gold in what was a very successful day for the North Region. Rob's win earns him automatic selection for the Welsh Cross Country team along with 2nd placed Cardiff AC athlete Andy Hunt for the Cardiff Cross Challenge Inter Area Match on Sunday 17th January 2010 followed 6 days later by the Belfast Challenge & Celtic International on Saturday 23rd january 2010. Well earned Rob.
In the Male Welsh Masters Championships there was more success for Eryri athletes who were also representing the North Region. In the 9.6km 40-69 race Eryri's Russell Owen finished 10th overall (2nd M/V50) in 36:00 with 30th Arwel Lewis 38:23. 56th Paul Jenkinson 41:27. 60th (1st M/V65) Don Williams 42:29 and 65th (2nd or 3rd M/V65?) Emyr Davies 43:29. Both the North's MV/40 and MV/50 teams won Gold. There were 79 Finishers.
In the Female Welsh Masters Championships 5.3km race Eryri's Annie Williams just missed out on the medals finishing 11th overall (4th F/V45) in 23:52 with 21st Ellie Salisbury 25:04 and 46th (3rd F/V60) Maggie Oliver 29:36. The North Regions F/V40 and F/V 50 teams also won Gold. There were 56 Finishers.
The Royal Welsh Showground's challenging course is certainly an excellent venue for such an event.
Well done to everyone who helped organise the event.
On the roads meanwhile and competing in his first race for a while, Eryri's Matthew Roberts missed out by two seconds of 3rd place in the Stockport 10 mile on Sunday 13th December finishing in a time of 55:50, mind you, the 1st lady was just behing him! There were 693 finishers.
