Great Arete Tuesday evening series Race #4 : Pen Dinas preview

Advance notice of the 4th race in the Great Arete midweek series up Pen Dinas in Nant Peris and this one is a right belter. Ran for the first time last year the winner Rob Greenwood took approximately 30mins to run the 1.5 mile with 1000ft climb course. The route is a classic Northern England BOFRA style route with the 1000ft of climb coming in the 3/4mile ascent - a lung busting steep run / walk followed by a black run like Herodian descent! Enjoy it!

Race starts at 1915, remember to arrive early for registration, as this is the fourth race in the series the series table to date will be available to view in future races or on the blog.

TWINNING VISIT TO LANDERNEAU

For the past eight years the club has had a twinning exchange with the running club in Landerneau. This year they have invited us to take part in a 10 or 20 km race on the Ile de Batz, near Roscoff, on Sunday 4th July. A minibus will be going, probably overnight Thursday and returning Monday. Accommodation is with our friends in the Landerneau club. Could any club members who are interested in going or need further information, please contact Maggie Oliver on 01286 871494 as soon as possible. Arrangements will need to be finalised soon.

56th Yorkshire 3 Peaks Race

Once again the Eryri Barmy Army were on the road yesterday - this time to take part in the vintage cracker 3 Peaks fell race. The race measures in at 24 mile with 4500ft of climb and is noted for it's speedy running sections, men's record stands at 2hrs.46mins and ladies at 3.14.

On a a warm day with very hard underfoot conditions there were 602 finishers out of around 750 starters - so the weather clearly had an effect. First home for Eryri was Math Roberts working himself up from 32nd at Penyghent to finish in 10th in 3.21, 2nd home for Eryri was Iain Ridgway who had to cope with severe stomach issues to finish in 64th and a time of 3.47, hot on his heels in in a time of 3.50 was Noel Craine. Craine was 175th at the summit of Penyghent but incredibly made 99 places to finish in 76th! Next home for Eryri was Sarah Ridgway in 177th and in 4.14 followed by Ali Chant in 311th and 4.33.30. Excitement ensued to see how who would be first home in the Dali series - once again Ali Thomas came home with the points to finish in 472nd and 4.58 with Dils Rowlands finishing in 547th and 5.17.

Excellently organised race, very difficult but a classic to be recommended!

Great Arete Race #2 Ras Foel Lus

An excellent turnout of 98 runners at the second race in the Great Arete tuesday evening series ended with a second victory in the series for Eryri's Math Roberts, fresh from a relaxing training weekend in Northern Ireland in a time of 22.57. Hot on Math's heels with an excellent descent and run-in was Gwyn Owen in 23.17 with Meirionnydd mountain goat Ifan Richards in 3rd in 23.24 - just edging out another Northern Irish returnee Sam Smith. Eryri's Scott Butterworth was 1st vet 40 home in 25.32, Arwel Lewis 1st vet 50 in 26.24 and Dafydd Whiteside-Thomas 1st vet 60 in 29.02. In the ladies, fresh from her sprint in the weekends Llanbedr-Blaenafon race was Eryri's Andrea Rowlands in a rapid 27.22, with Ellie Salisbury 1st lady vet 40 in 33.01, Annie Williams with another storming win in the ladies vet 50's in 29.59 and 3rd lady overall, and Maggie Oliver (another returnee from the Northern Irish relaxed training weekend) 1st vet 60 in 35.18.

In the Caernarfon Tyres juniors Morgan Evans won the under 16's, Michael Spill the under 8's and John Spill thundering to another win in the under 14's/12's/10's and Bronwen Jenks the 1st girl home.

Big thanks again to all marshalls, Team Dolly, Ellie for organising after a rapid return from from the Highlander MM and finally Dils Dodo Rowlands for providing mid-race encouragment.

Next in the series is quite possibly the best in the series - Mynydd Mawr once again from the village of Fron and first counter in the Eryri Mountain championships - next tuesday.
