Scafell Pike Fell Race

4 Eryri Harriers travelled up to this race, the final round in the 'King and Queen of the Mountains' competition (adding up of places in Snowdon, Ben Nevis and Scafell races), which Ali Thomas finished 3rd lady in this year. In the race Nick Fish of Borrowdale won in 54 minutes, I (Iain Ridgway) was 12th in 64 mins, Sarah Ridgway 1st woman in 70 mins, Noel Craine a few minutes behind and Ali Thomas 2nd Vet 40 (I think). In the Jack and Jill competition (fastest couple), Sarah and I were 2nd. Plenty of Pete Bland vouchers to be had. Classic little race, only 4.5 miles but 3000ft ascent, a classic straight up and down.

COLWYN BAY XC REPORT

There was a good turnout from the club for the first race of the North Wales Cross Country League at sunny Colwyn Bay on Saturday 26th September, the hard ground made for a fast paced Women and men's race. Andrea Rowlands in a rich vein of form at the moment led the women's team home in 6th place followed by: 14th Becky Law, 18th Annie Williams, 22nd Jenny Heming, 34th Ellie Salisbury, 39th Heather Burrows, 57th Sue Hughes, 67th Maggie Oliver and 84th Jenny Blakemore. Ron Hird running in the race as a MV/70 finished 106th..
Richard Roberts led the men's team home finishing 4th in a high quality field behind 1st Chris Davies (Telford), 2nd Rob Samuel running for Bangor University as per North Wales XC rules and 3rd Tim Davies (Maldwyn). Gwyn Owen is showing signs of getting back to his best with 5th place with Russell Owen having a storming run (for a MV/50) with 26th place followed by: 42nd Arwel Lewis, 52nd Jordan Evans, 55th Chris Evans, 68th Tony Woodall, 75th SPJones, 79th Rory O'Donnell, 85th Eilir Evans, 92nd Gwyn Williams, 96th Gary Porter-Jones, 107th Emyr Davies, 115th Don Williams, 138th Paul Jenkinson, 140th John Harold, 149th Stephen Edwards, 155th Eurwyn Edwards, 102nd Mike Blake, 181st Steve Pilbean and 186th Iorwerth Roberts.
Leading race positions/times will be published in the Daily Post next Tuesday along with the team results.
Unfortunately there was an issue with dogs infringing on the course again causing some runners to take evasive action! Well it was a big black Labrador with his big white teeth showing! But what can you do? it is a public park and people are allowed to walk their dogs there. I just wish they would keep them on a leash!
The next race will be organised by Telford AC at Lilleshall? or is it Bridgnorth as someone mentioned today? If it is Bridgnorth then all the better for us mountain runners! There will be a mini bus going to the event departing Parc Menai at 10:30am on Saturday 10th October.

Commonwealth mountain running champs, Keswick

The first ever Commonwealth Mountain and Ultra running championships were held in Keswick last weekend. Eryri had 6 runners representing Wales in the championships, with events including the 24hr race, 100k road race, uphill and up and down mountain races. The highlight of the weekend was a bronze for John Pares for Wales in the 24hr race and the sight of the big Kenyan beating the Commonwealths best in the uphill and and up and down mountain races.

EUROKIMM 2009
Adrian & I managed to win the mixed category at this fantastic mountain marathon last w/e, & finished 3rd overall - all due to his cunning route choice, & nothing to do with our fitness!! It's a two day (6 hrs + 6 hrs) score event, held anually in The Haute Savoie, & well worth putting in your dairy. See www.fabian4.co.uk/euroKIMM for more details. We were out for 5 hrs 57 mins on day one, & 5 hrs 55 mins on day two, so we didn't waste any time or incurr penalties. Alcahol was offered to all the competitors round the campfire as usual at the overnight camp, the weather was fantastic, & there were no midges. We came home with new walking/skiing poles, T-shirts & wine, which made up for the fact that on the LAMM, we were beaten into 2nd place in the mixed category, by pair who finished with the same number of points as us, but in a slightly faster time, & on the SLMM, we were beaten into 2nd place in the vets category, by a pair of 'elderly gentlemen' whose vets handicap meant that they had 4 hrs knocked of their total time! Maybe if Adrian & I keep doing the SLMM together, we'll come home with a prize in 10 years time when we're seriously old gits............

Ben Nevis Race 2009

Unfortunatley due to a fixture clash this year Britain's highest fell race clashed with the Peris this year............allowing a hardcore Eryri mob to do the 14 hour round trip and having perfect excuse to not to have to do the Peris!

The weather forecast wasn't great and true to it's word race day came with 100metre low cloud, wind and driving rain. As the race announcer started giving out info such as it's -3 degrees on the summit and visibility is down to 50feet - body cover was increased by most.

By looking at the results the weather had a slight effect with most runners down on last years time.
Home in 32nd for Eryri was Math Roberts in 1.50.55 - a bit down on last year; in 106th but a brill 4th lady was Sarah Ridgeway in 2.04.34 - a bit more down on last year; in 130th was Noel Craine in 2.06.48 - a little bit more down on last year; in 265th was Paul Jones in 2.27.36 - 1st time and in road shoes!; in 278th was Ali Thomas in 2.29.19 - a tad down on last time and in 422nd in 3.00.17 was Ian Blakemore.

The pub the club runners found on the night of the race managed to make up for the horrid weather and lower times and with only Scafell remaining Math Roberts, Noel Craine and Ali Thomas are all well in contention for the title of Britain's "King of the Mountains" for 2009!

Peris Horseshoe

Click here for Peris Race results

The bare bones!, the organisers ramblings!Well that was a rush, 41 halves and 4 earlies headed off into the Elidir mist, where had they all come from?,with llyn brenig and the'Ben' on the most I expected was about 15 but the fact it was a club and WFRA championship (plus the fact is a cracking underrated race) must have boosted the figures.
Full marks 2 Paul Jenks, saving himself until he reached the mist then legging it 2 beat his own record, Arwel and Don taking the 50 & 60 while Maggie Oliver now has the distinction of holding the F60 record in both Peris's!.After all her injuries and trials and tribulations it was nice to see Jenny Hemline back racing finishing just over a minute behind Anna Bartlett and picking up 1st local lady 4 her troubles
The full.Well Mercias Pete Vale was away and that was that recording the 5th fastest time in the races 22 year history leaving Richard and Chris in his wake while early challanger Sam Smith discovered to his cost that going up Glyder isnt as easy as descending Tryfan! In the ladies Mrs Rowlands finally recorded her 1st win, steady pacing by Kat got her 2nd place while Alwyn Oliver made it a family'nain a taid' double by taking the o/60.
Due 2 a cock up by me the Cread 1st locals trophies were mistakenly awarded but were rectified the next day, Edwin Williams and Stell '1st did the race when it was 10-(thats ten shillings for the youngsters or 50pence for the kids) ' Farrar.
Once again enough enough praise cannot lavished on all those people who turn out on the day 2 help and a lot of them are not even Eryri! Im not going 2 name them all here but we know who they are and the bottom line is if they were not there the whole thing would go pear shaped and where would the race be then?,thanx 2 all of u again!
Due to the efficency of Arwels Angels Im sure the results will soon be posted so watch this space, meanwhile next sat (the 12th) I am organising the junior championship on the Orme so if you have a couple of hours spare get on the dog & bone 2 me.Mike.

A few coppers for a race

The 2009 Police Sport UK 10 Mile Road Race Championships will be hosted for the first time by North Wales Police Sports Association on Wednesday 16th September in Llandudno.

There are over 400 officers and staff from 39 forces around the UK taking part; with 27 of them from North Wales.

Starting at 2pm at the Pier Gates, the race will follow the Marine Drive around the Great Orme to West Shore before turning round and reversing the route back to the Promenade and finishing outside Venue Cymru.

I'm the organiser and I'm looking for extra marshals should anyone have a couple of hours to spare. And you'll get a souvenir mug for your trouble!

So much easier organising a small fellrace, never again!!!

Craig.

Becki's Charity Welsh Perimeter Ride - 800 miles, 8 days, £800 - Update

Just a quick update as haven't been able to make it to any races for a while!

I managed to complete the ride - it says 805.07 miles of Welsh perimeter and a cycle time of 64.26.30 hours on my speedometer so all is good! Also, my master sponsor form is saying £1,158.12 so I am very happy and excited - the target amount for the water pump is in the pipelines and every other little bit will be helpful too.

Thanks to everyone for their donations/sponsorship - I'll be sorting out a brief ride blog and details from my brother regarding how the money is spent too! I have a facebook group - Becki's Charity Welsh Perimeter Ride - 800 miles, 8 days, £800 - for your interest aswell.

Looking forward to a good run the hills soon!

Cheers,

Becki Law (pep625@bangor.ac.uk)
