Llangynhafal Loop

There were 18 Eryri runners in Saturday's classic Clwydian Hills Martin Cortvriend organised Llangynhafal Loop. Weather conditions looked to be terrific as Borrowdale's Morgan Donnelly lead the pack of 108 home smashing Tim Davies' course record en-route in a time of 37.18. First home for Eryri was on form Cheshire based Martin Cliffe in 3rd place in 42.01. The Eryri race of the day was also for the 1st in the vet 50's, SPJ nicking it off Arwel in the second half of the race to finish in 45.25 and 1st vet 50 and just 11 seconds ahead of Arwel in 45.36! Don Williams ran well to win the vet 60's in a cracking time of 48.56. Andrea Rowland's was 2nd lady home in 48.58, with Annie Williams and Maggie Oliver both winning their age categories of ladies vet 50 and vet 60 for the second week in a row in times of 51.42 and 64.35 respectively!

Bob Graham Round pacers needed

I have been with the club for about 2 years now and we may have meet at various fell races in that time.

I am planning to attempt the Bob Graham Round on the 26th of June this year and am short of capable pacers to keep me feed, watered and motivated on legs 2 or 3. Food, accommodation and transport round the Lakes will be provided in addition to my extreme gratitude and a commitment of returning the favor for similar challenges. Interested? then drop me a mail at clive.king@sun.com or 07765898309. The average pace to get around in 24 hours is 2.5 miles an hour and each leg is about around 13 miles and 5000ft, so speed in not a requirement.

If you are interested you can find my training blog at http://ambitionexceedsability.blogspot.com/

Wednesday Night Runs

We have decided to continue the 'Thursday night' runs through the summer, but on Wednesdays @ 6pm - starting from a week Wednesday.

These runs are open for Eryri members and people unconnected with the club. These runs are not organised by Eryri they are organsied and insured through runsnowdonia - so obviously we reserve the right to not include people on the email list.

The runs are generally at a steady pace, probably at a pace which would put you in the top 1/2 or 3rd of a fell race, and people who come on the run are expected to have some degree of experience and be comfortable in mountainous terrain, such as exposed ridges. Runs last up to 2 hrs. Generally 4-12 people turn up each week.

Dogs are welcome, we always take our 2 collies.

If you want to be included on the email list please email me at iain.ridgway (at) bangor.ac.uk

Arwel Lewis had a strong run to finish in 15th overall but 1st vet 50 and Don Williams 2nd vet 60 home. First lady home was Calder Valley's Helen Fines with first Eryri and in 2nd Andrea Rowlands, Jenny Hemming running well to finish 3rd. Annie Williams ran well to finish 1st vet 40 lady.

Rhayader 20

Classic 20 mile road race today. Probably one of the most picturesque road races in the calendar, starts off with 2 quick laps of Rhayader then the climb starts which lasts the best part of 5 miles, from then its undulating, until around 10 miles when the descents start, but a few steep hills, the last one at 18.5 miles always claims a few casualties. Conditions were about spot on really, no rain, not to hot or cold and whilst it was breezy, the winds weren't strong enough to really affect times.

Sarah and I both finished 4th in our respective fields, in times of 2:07:56 and 2:23:57, with Ashley Wager the only other Eryri runner, finishing in 2:40:37.

UK INTERCOUNTIES XC CHAMPS BIRMINGHAM

Three Eryri Harriers were among the country's elite athletes representing North Wales in the UK Intercounties Cross Country Championships at Birmingham on Saturday 13th March.
Jenny Heming ran in the Senior Women's 8km race finishing 183rd in 33:58. There were 265 finishers.
In the Senior Men's 12km race Rob Samuel was disappointed to finish 64th! A very good run in most peoples opinion. Still Rob is setting himself high standards these days and is training hard at the moment for events later on in the year. Richard Roberts also did well to make the top hundred finishing 97th in 38:56. There were 285 finishers.

ERYRI'S MEN CLIMB TO SAFETY

In the fourth Borders Road Running league fixture at Mold on Sunday 14th March Eryri men's best team score of the season of 521 saw them climb one place and out of the relegation positions for the first time this season. Arwel Lewis 31:16. 51st Tony Woodall 31:36. 60th After his TV appearance with Mo Farah the previous day at the UK Intercounties Cross Country Championships in Birmingham (That is, when Mo lapped Jos!!) 32:22. 61st Ashley Wager 32:28. 72nd After competing in the Moel Wnion race the previous day, Gwyn Williams 33:00. 90th and 1st MV/65 Don Williams 34:39. 97th and 2nd MV/65 Emyr Davies 34:58. 102nd another Border League debutant Nick Jones 35:15. 106th Ian Rothery 35:33. 154th (Bus driver) Mervyn Williams 38:08 and 161st Alun Rowlands 38:31.
In the overall team standings Wirral are seemingly running away with the title totalling 1246pts. 2nd Buckley 2026pts. 3rd Wallasey 2547pts. 4th Prestatyn 2560pts. 5th Eryri 2753Pts. 6th Wrexham 2970pts and 7th Abergele 5305pts.

Both Becky and Maggie had run the tougher than usual Moel Wnion race the previous day. Eryri's women are currently 3rd in Division Two, 12 points behind West Cheshire in the race for promotion.

Bath Half Marathon

Noel Craine and Ali Thomas made the long journey south to run Bath Half Marathon this weekend.

Noel, chasing the half marathon pb's of Lee and Kleeman, managed to do so running an excellent 1:23, whilst Ali had a superb run to finish in 1:45.

Those who would like to pass on their congratulations to the pair, Ali will be at hill sprints on Tuesday, but Noel is away again..

High Peak Marathon

This weekend Sarah and I ran the High Peak Marathon, a 40 mile fell race around the derwent watershed at night. I was running for High Peak Rollerbladers, a team from Glossopdale Harriers, whilst Sarah was running for her new club, Dark Peak, with Mahogny Ridge Runners.

We finished in 9:29:20, 1 second ahead of 3rd placed in 9:29:21, but unfortunately do not get a placing due a team member having to retire after 8 hrs. Sarah's team finished in 10:47:02, 2nd mixed team.

For me it goes down in the "hard day at the office" category. The plan was fly back from the US overnight, sleep in the day, set off at 11pm fresh..didn't work out that way, felt shattered from the off and just tagged on to the back of my team mates. 2 ultras and a marathon in 21 days was overkill.. After 8 hrs or so I finally seemed to wake up. Sarah started off with a stomach issue, but finished strongly.

A great event, very hard going with deep snow on the Bleaklow section.

Good to see Paul Wathan back on the roads again after a lengthy spell out due to injury and work committments. Paul finished 4th overall in the tough undulating event in a time of 35:00 with his partner Gemma Morgans also making a welcome return to the road scene finishing 98th overall and 1st Junior Woman in a time of 44:26 while John Hancock finished 452nd in a time of 64:50.
Next Sunday 14th March 11am is the 4th fixture in the 2009/10 Borders Road Running League organised by Wrecsam Tri Club. The event HQ is at the Mold Alyn School, Wrexham Road, Mold, CH7 1HT. Race distance - 5 miles.
There will be a mini bus going to the event departing Parc Menai at 8:45am.
Reminder: Cotswolds Betws Y Coed are offering a 20% discount to all members of the Eryri Harriers during the month of March.
